"Testing the Kin Selection Theory: Who Controls the Investments?" from The Ants (1990), by Bert Hölldobler and Edward O. Wilson

چکیده
In "Testing the Kin Selection Theory: Who Controls the Investments?" Bert Hölldobler and Edward Osborne Wilson discussed the predictive power of kin selection theory, a theory about the evolution [3] of social behaviors. As part of Hölldobler and Wilson's 1990 book titled The Ants, Hölldobler and Wilson compared predictions about the reproductive practices of ants to data about the reproductive practices of ants. They showed that the data generally supported the expected behaviors proposed by kin selection theory. Later in their careers, both Hölldobler and Wilson argued that kin selection theory provided an insufficient explanation for the evolution [3] of social behavior. Hölldobler and Wilsons' efforts were emblematic of a larger trend among ant researchers and sociobiologists to explain the evolution [3] of social behavior by focusing on the reproductive dynamics of social organisms.

In "Altruism and the Origin of the Worker Caste," Bert Hölldobler and Edward Osborne Wilson explore the evolutionary origins of worker ants. "Altruism and the Origin of the Worker Caste" is the fourth chapter of Hölldobler and Wilson's book, The Ants, which was published by The Belknap Press of Harvard University [4] in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1990. In "Altruism and the Origin of the Worke...
متن کاملEusociality: origin and consequences.
In this new assessment of the empirical evidence, an alternative to the standard model is proposed: group selection is the strong binding force in eusocial evolution; individual selection, the strong dissolutive force; and kin selection (narrowly defined), either a weak binding or weak dissolutive force, according to circumstance. Close kinship may be more a consequence of eusociality than a fa...
متن کاملSex differences in cooperative silk-spinning by weaver ant larvae.
Final-instar larvae of weaver ants (Oecophylla longinoda) use their silk for nest construction rather than for cocoon spinning; this commitment represents a shift from entirely selfish to entirely cooperative behavior that occurred after the emergence of the phylogenetically advanced subfamily Formicinae. Male larvae were found to have smaller silk glands and to contribute substantially less si...

Kinship, greenbeards, and runaway social selection in the evolution of social insect cooperation.
Social Hymenoptera have played a leading role in development and testing of kin selection theory. Inclusive fitness models, following from Hamilton's rule, successfully predict major life history characteristics, such as biased sex investment ratios and conflict over parentage of male offspring. However, kin selection models poorly predict patterns of caste-biasing nepotism and reproductive ske...
